Friendship?

Chapter 3
Corey returned two days later carrying a small bag.
He placed it on a stump far enough from the cabin that whoever lived inside would not feel cornered. Food.
Nothing elaborate. Nothing that required an explanation.
"Dont be frightened, I'm not coming any closer,"
Corey called toward the cabin.
But all he recieved was Silence.
"I just wanted to say I'm sorry."
Nothing moved, so Corey left.
Nifty did not touch the bag for hours. He watched it from the cabin.
Then from behind a tree. Then from another tree.
Humans did things because they wanted something. At least, that was what Nifty had learned from watching them.
Perhaps this was another trap. Night came.
The human did not return and eventually hunger won.
The next morning, the stump was empty and Corey had returned.
He came by once and a while, and left more things.
Not every day, and that mattered to Nifty
He never walked directly to the cabin. He never tried the door.
He never searched the property. Sometimes he left just food and water.
Once he left a small first-aid kit. Another time, after noticing scraps of paper through the cabin window, he left a sketchbook and several pencils.
That gift bothered Nifty it meant the human had noticed something about him and that could be dangerous.
Nifty waited until long after Corey disappeared before retrieving them. New.
Unbroken. Better than anything he had scavenged from town.
He hated how much he wanted to use them, he couldnt take it any longer, that night he drew until morning.
As weeks passed. Corey began to understand that he was being watched by Nifty so he would be a little silly when coming around.
He would catch movement between the trees, then nothing. Nifty was learning, this human wasn't like the others.
The human never brought anyone with him.
He never followed when Nifty moved through the trees and never tried to force his way closer.
More importantly, Corey never demanded anything in return. For Nifty, that was difficult to understand.
One evening Corey placed a bag on the stump and turned to leave. He stopped, and hesitated a second he could feel Nifty was near by. “ Who are you” he heard.
The voice came from somewhere in the trees. Corey slowly turned around.
“ corey” he said
Nifty confused said “ whats a corey”
He saw nothing. "That's my name," he said.
"I knew that " nifty bit back
"Do I get to know yours?"corey asked
Silence.
Then: "No." Corey laughed quietly.

"Fair enough." Corey said
Then Corey walked away.
From the shadows, Nifty watched him until he disappeared.
