Rook?

Chapter 12

Rook was built much like Nifty, though a little taller and leaner, with long pointed ears, an old nick cut from one edge, and that uneven grin Nifty could draw from memory even when other faces blurred. The drawing caught the tilt of his head and the familiar look that always seemed to say he knew something Nifty didn't.
Rook's expression changed. He recognized him.
The crack widened.
The figure on the other side stepped into the strange light. Nifty knew him before his mind had time to question what his eyes were seeing.
The familiar shape of his face, it was him
For months, Nifty had fought to keep that face from fading. He had drawn it in pencil, redrawn it when the lines felt wrong, stared at it late into the night and tried to remember the sound of the voice that belonged to it.
Now he was standing there. Alive.
Real. Only a few impossible feet away.
"Rook?" The name barely escaped Nifty's mouth.
Rooks expression changed. For one heartbeat, he simply stared.
Then his eyes widened. "NIFTY!" The voice came through strangely, stretched and muffled, as if it had traveled through deep water.
Nifty lurched forward. "Rook!" Corey grabbed his shoulder and said
"Wait Nifty”
"That's him!" Nifty shouted
"I know. Just don't touch that thing we dont know what it is" Corey replied
Nifty barely heard him.
Rook was saying something too, but the words broke apart before they reached them. Then Rook noticed Corey.
His eyes moved from Nifty to the human standing beside him. The excitement on his face vanished.
Rook shouted something sharp and angry.
Nifty shook his head.
"No! Its ok he's with me!"
Whether he understood him or not, Nifty couldn't tell.
Rook looked around frantically, then back at Nifty. And then he starting running
Rook sprinted toward the opening. Nifty's heart was beating so hard he could feel it in his hands.
The purple fracture trembled. But Rook was getting closer.
Nifty moved toward the crack despite Corey's warning.
"Nifty." "Im coming through." Rook yelled as he reached out.
So did Nifty. For the smallest fraction of a second, Nifty believed their hands might meet.
Just as they were close the crack snapped shut.
